You can add more sugar if you want it sweeter or you can add different ingredients to give it a unique flavour. Some people use lemon to give their bbq sauce a tangy taste. Some prefer to cut down on the tartness of the vinegar and use tomato-based bbq sauce. Others add cumin and onion powder to amp up the flavour of their bbq sauce. You can also add hot sauce to give your regular bbq sauce more kick. Fresh herbs, such as rosemary, bay leaf, or basil, can also give your bbq sauce a punch of new flavour.

You will need:

  • Ketchup – 1 cup
  • Whiskey – 3/4 cup
  • Brown sugar – 1/2 cup
  • White or cider vinegar – 1/4 cup
  • Worcestershire sauce – 1 tablespoon
  • Mustard powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – 1 teaspoon
  • Pepper – 1 teaspoon
  • Garlic powder – 1/2 teaspoon

How to do it:

First, you need to combine all the ingredients in a heavy-based saucepan. Then, let it boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat and let it simmer for about fifteen minutes. Remember to stir it often so the bottom will not burn. Continue stirring until the sauce thickens and becomes reduced. Allow it to cool before storing it in a sterile container. You may put it in the fridge for up to three weeks.

Do not forget to warm the sauce in a saucepan before you apply it to meat. This bbq sauce is great for ribs, but you can also brush it on other meats. You can also add real shine by adding cubes of butter when you heat the sauce before you apply it on the meat.
